MARCH MADNESS
March is the month we do lots of cattle work. We are about to finish up calving except for a few stragglers. Then the cows and calves were worked. They got shots and tattoos before being moved to the AI pastures. The sale bulls are freeze branded first and then the replacement heifers. This takes the better part of a week along with ultrasounding the heifers. We delivered the long distance hauls first. Each one of our guys made one trip with Grant going to Iowa; Junior to South Dakota; and Dan to Oklahoma and eastern Texas. Dru delivered western Texas and made stops in northern Nebraska on his way to Montana. We hired truckers to make the longer trips. Dru spent the last two weeks delivering in Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska.
We had good calving weather except the wind really blew hard for part of a week. The dust was so bad people turned on their headlights while driving. I hope everyone remembers this when we get a down pour but I know they will be complaining. Vance had five radiation treatments in Kearney in one week. Each treatment took five minutes and he did not suffer any ill effects. He has enjoyed visitors and is keeping up on all the NCAA and NIT basketball games. On nice days he drove out to see the baby calves and watch the crew freeze brand. With the start of daylight saving time, I leave you this month with . . . “The beauty of daylight-saving time is that it just makes everyone feel sunnier.” – Congressman Edward Markey |
